Opportunities

I am looking to grow the Glacier and Climate Dynamics group within the Department of Geography at the University of Oregon!

Postdoctoral opportunities: I have a current opening (see below). In addition, those interested in national fellowships (e.g. NSF OPP or EAR; NOAA Climate and Global Change) to be hosted in the group are encouraged to reach out about proposal ideas.

Graduate opportunities: The deadline for Graduate applications for Fall 2024 has passed; check back later for any opportunities for Fall 2025.

Undergraduate opportunities: UO undergrads interested in research opportunities are encouraged to reach out. Students from a variety of majors may be well-prepared to get involved, though a strong quantitative background (or drive to develop such skills) will be helpful.

  • The OVPRI supports undergraduate research through a variety of awards and fellowships. If you’re interested in applying with me as a faculty mentor, please get in touch!

The postdoctoral position is to work on an NSF-funded project investigating the dynamics of the Greenland Ice Sheet’s outlet glaciers over the industrial era, with a focus on their response to early 20th Century warming. The postdoctoral fellow will primarily run experiments using NASA’s Ice-sheet and Sea-level System Model (ISSM), including simulations of the ice sheet as a whole, as well as case studies on individual outlet glaciers. This will include analysis of existing climate and ice-sheet datasets to inform model experiments. Additionally, the successful candidate will contribute to interpretation and dissemination of project results, and will contribute to a vibrant and supportive research group, ideally including mentoring students on related projects. Candidates will ideally have a research background in glaciology, climate, or adjacent fields; past experience running ice sheet models is helpful but not required. The start date is negotiable, but ideally summer or fall 2024.  Applications can be submitted here: https://careers.uoregon.edu/en-us/job/533128/pro-tem-research-assistantassociatepostdoctoral-pool-geography-open-pool . Interested candidates with further questions about the position can email me at jchr {at} oregon {dot} edu.
